چکیده

In search of common denominators The field of medical informatics continues to have an identity crisis. Our most articulate spokespeople seem to be unsure whether our discipline is called “medical informatics,” or “biomedical informatics,” or “health informatics,” or some other term. When asked what is the subject matter of our field, we typically respond first by saying, “it’s interdisciplinary” or “it brings together computers and health care.” We tend to define what we do in terms of what other academic communities do, without highlighting our unique intellectual contribution.

Background and Aim: Ontologies facilitate data integration, exchange, searching and querying. Open Biomedical Ontologies (OBO) Foundry is a solution for creating reference ontologies. In this foundry, the design of ontologies is based on established principles which allow for their interactions as a single system. The purpose of this study is to determine the main features of ontologies develop...

Ten theses on clinical ontologies.

We present ten principles for clinical ontologies that describe the authors' opinion about what should be understood by the notion of clinical ontologies and what not. In contrast to clinical terminology systems, clinical ontologies are considered to be semantic reference systems and for that--first of all--strive to account for the properties of the domain entities themselves and their proper ...

Ontologies a key concept in informatics and key for open definition of cases , exposures and outcome measures

Ontologies are a key concept in informatics, and the leading article in this issue addresses their importance.1 Ontologies describe key concepts within a domain and their relationships. This leading article describes how to use an ontological approach to identify data sources and combine data. We advocate that the approach to developing datasets and coding lists should also be ontological.2 Thi...

Chapter #2.5 BIOMEDICAL ONTOLOGIES

Ontology design is an important aspect of medical informatics, and reusability is a key issue that is determined by the level of compatibility among ontology concepts and among the theories of the biomedical domain they convey. In this article, we examine OpenGALEN, the UMLS Semantic Network, SNOMED CT, the Foundational Model of Anatomy, and the MENELAS ontology as well as descriptions of the b...
